WHERE TO STAY IN & AROUND SPLIT, MY BEST RECOMMANDATIONS [2026]
Perched between the Adriatic Sea and Marjan Hill, Split is a city where centuries of history meet the rhythm of mediterranean life. At its heart lies Diocletian’s Palace, where ancient columns hold up medieval homes and modern wine bars nestle into stone that’s over 1,700 years old. Narrow alleys and weathered walls tell stories of the past, while the sunlit Riva, bustling cafés, and nearby beaches keep life firmly in the present. Split is a city to explore history, feel present & fall in love with.
I wrote a complete guide for the best things to do & see in Split & if you’re planning a trip to Split and searching for the best place to stay — whether you’re after luxury, comfort, or value — here are 6 of the city’s top stays for 2026.

BEST HIGH-END HOTEL | HOTEL AMBASSADOR
Overlooking the Adriatic from Split’s western promenade, Hotel Ambasador delivers the city’s most iconic view, best admired from its infinity pool. Steps from the Riva and Diocletian’s Palace, it balances cultural immersion with coastal calm. Rebuilt in 2022, the hotel preserves its 1930s elegance behind a crisp white façade, pairing minimalist interiors with yacht-dotted marina vistas. Rooms are serene and design-led, the hotel Spa draws on the healing properties of seawater and salt for deeply restorative treatments. And at Restaurant Méditerranée, UNESCO-celebrated Adriatic cuisine is served with sea breezes and live music. A refined base opened all-year around for those seeking style, history & relaxation.

BEST AIRBNB | LUXURY APARTMENT VOLAT, DOWNTOWN
How about sleeping in a piece of history? You can do it in this Airbnb appartement, carved from a 200-year-old wine cellar, reminiscent of those beneath Diocletian’s Palace, just five minutes away. Nestled on the ground floor of a 19th-century Croatian stone house, it retains authentic Dalmatian charm, with cool stone walls that keep you comfortable in summer and cozy warmth in winter. Playful touches, like a velvety aqua-blue sofa, complement traditional arcaded ceilings and cavernous stone interiors, creating a space full of character.
From 200€ (low-season) for a 2-night minimum stay. Book here.

BEST SURROUNDINGS STAY | VILLA MIKI
For those seeking respite from Split’s lively energy, the surrounding coastline offers a quieter escape. Just beyond the city, in the neighbouring town of Podstrana, this contemporary villa feels like a well-kept secret boutique-hotel style. Spacious rooms are modern & well-designed with spa-like rainfall showers & view over the Adriactic. Breakfasts are exceptional with freshly prepared dishes, homemade bread and still-warm croissants. The hushed pool & the 5-minute away family-friendly beach offers a great alternative to Split’s often-crowded beaches. It’s calm, local & unspoilt – ideal for those who want to dive into slow Mediterranean living.
Rooms from 120€

BEST HOSTEL FOR YOUNG TRAVELERS | BOOZE & SNOOZE, HOSTEL DVOR
During my first trips to Split back in 2021, I tried a few hostels and found two great options. The first time, I choose Booze & Snooze. It’s extremely social and you’ll end up partying with the staff. But facilities are limited (there’s no kitchen & no real common space). The second time, I stayed at Hostel Dvor, near Marjan Hill. The hostel is spacious, very clean with comfortable beds (private room also available). They also provide a simple yet efficient breakfast each morning, free of charge. So, ultimately, it depends on what you’re looking for: if you don’t mind limited privacy and want to party, Booze & Snooze is the place to go. For a more relaxed stay where you can still meet people without sacrificing comfort, Hostel Dvor is a better option.
From 30€ a night in dormitory.

☆
Split is definitely a must-visit destination for any trip to Europe, or for anyone exploring the Balkans. I fell in love with Croatia during my first visit in 2021 — I adored its turquoise waters, the charm of its medieval historic towns, the relaxed pace of life, and I found the Croatians very friendly. I hope that on your own journey, you’ll feel the same way about Croatia as I do.
